For months I’ve wanted and tried (and failed!) to find the perfect community platform for paid subscribers to chat about a monthly theme/promp, which is my Emberlight Community.

So I created a Section on here, and was hoping that the comments section on each monthly post would act like a sort of room, a gathering around a hearth. But it wasn’t one. It didn’t feel like one. It was a comments section of an article, just like any other, and I felt like something was still missing. I used to do it in the Substack Chat too (before it became a paid villagers only thing) hoping that would feel more like a room, and that didn’t really work either (Substack chat doesn’t really cut it (in my opinion). Plus, you can’t edit your replies/posts in there or add pictures, which is frustrating!

So, I decided to build my own space since I couldn't find exactly what I wanted or was looking for.

And in my new Emberlight Community space on Lovable you can do the things that Substack chat and comments can't. You can edit your post (well you can do that in post comments), add images, and even add headlines to your posts! (and you also don’t have to just reply to the monthly prompt either. You can make your own posts too, if you want (but they wouldn’t be spammy link drop stuff like all the Subscriber Chats turn into — like cluttered community notice boards).

So…. here’s the thing: a good question deserves more than just a reply box underneath an article. It deserves a place where people can pull up a chair, see who else showed up, and actually talk to each other, not just to me.

That’s why the Emberlight has a room now.

The monthly Emberlight post isn’t going anywhere. Once a month, I’ll still show up here with something from my own month and a question with some grit to it (not just “how’s everyone doing?” more like “what are you pretending is fine right now?”). That part stays the same. But that question will also live in the new Emberlight space, like above. And the 'who's in the room' section at the top shows I'm currently in the space, with a custom message ('Hello everyone!') that's totally optional — you can change it whenever you want, or leave it blank entirely.

And this is where the talking-back-and-forth happens. Instead of leaving it in the comments underneath the post, that's why I built Emberlight, a standalone space just for that. It’s its own little corner of the internet, made for exactly one thing: hearth-tenders sitting around that month’s question together, for as long as they want, without it getting buried under whatever else Substack decides to show them that day.

This isn’t just about dropping a thought and hoping for the best. You can reply directly to each other’s posts too with those threads neatly collapsing into little ‘murmurs’ until you’re ready to expand them and listen in. It’s a real, living back-and-forth between hearth-tenders (aka paid subscribers) built for actual dialogue instead of just parallel comments bouncing off my main post.

If you’re already a paid subscriber, you’ll see the link button to the new Emberlight conversation space further down. If you’re not yet and you become one at some point, you’ll find the link in your Welcome Email (and it’s also available on the paid subscriber Clubhouse platform too).

And to my paid subscribers if I could get your feedback on the platform once you check it out, I’d be grateful! Let me know what you think, or what features you’d like to see that aren’t there already. Right now it's still one room (rather than separate ones for different topics) where everyone can post/share — either in response to the monthly prompt or whatever you would like to! But maybe down the line, if people think it might be useful, I could create separate ‘rooms’ for different topics (like grief, mindfulness, growth…whatever else you think) or…well, whatever you might like to see on the platform! Any kind of feedback is helpful.

And a few things have already landed. There’s a warming button now: not a like or heart button like standard social media, more like lighting a little ember on someone’s post, so they know it landed without it turning into a popularity contest. Nobody sees a count, you just see ‘Caitlin warmed this’ (or whoever hit the button).

There’s a kept shelf too, a private little corner just for you, where you can tuck away a post you want to find again later — a recipe someone shared, a line that stuck with you, whatever.

And I just hooked up a monthly digest feature that gathers what was shared each month, so nothing gets lost in the scroll, and I can pin it as a post once it's ready. There's also a “looking back” search function too.

When you log in, there’s a welcome-back banner that tells you right away how many new voices have joined or who’s replied to you since you last pulled up a chair. You don’t have to hunt for the thread or worry about getting buried under whatever else Substack decides to show your feed that day. And if you wonder if anyone’s actually in the house right now, there’s a live presence pill at the top of the room showing who’s currently sitting by the fire. It feels less like an empty message board and more like walking into a room where people are already talking. At least that's the plan.

Nothing’s promised on a timeline. I just wanted you to know I’m listening, and still building.

Eight months ago I lit a fire and left the door wide open. Anyone could wander in, pull up a chair, stay as long as they liked. No ticket required. A donation button at the bottom for anyone who felt moved — which, it turns out, is not how humans work when they’re tired and the button requires three clicks and a decision.

The Emberlight has always been the part of this village I love most. Not the essays, as much as I love writing them. Not the apps or the kits or the architecture of it all. This. A question by the fire. The same people showing up month after month. The slow, unglamorous work of being honest with strangers who stop feeling like strangers.

Here’s what I learned from eight months of holding it open to everyone: a living room with no walls isn’t a living room. It’s a doorway. And doorways are lovely, but you can’t actually rest in one.

So I’m doing something I should have done sooner, and I’m not going to dress it up as anything other than what it is: the Emberlight is moving home.

Starting with the May gathering, it lives inside the paid village — not because wonder has a toll booth, but because I do. Not a financial toll. A presence toll. I can show up in real relationship with a room of people who’ve chosen to be here. I cannot do that for the entire internet and still make it feel like anything.

The first eight Emberlight posts — September 2025 through April 2026 — are staying exactly where they are. Free. Archived. Part of the story of how this place grew. If you’ve been here from the beginning: thank you. You were the proof that this was worth building properly.

Welcome back to the Emberlight.

The fire’s lit. Pull your chair in. You don’t need to bring a tidy version of how April went — just whatever’s actually true.

This month I want to talk about anchors.

Not the heavy, chain-and-barnacle kind. The small ones. The ones that are so ordinary you’ve probably stopped noticing them: the walk to the mailbox, bare feet on cool grass, a hand resting on your own chest. The cup of tea you made because your hands needed something to hold.

I’ve been thinking about how much of modern life is designed to keep us untethered. The scroll, the ping, the constant low-grade hum of elsewhere. We’ve talked before about the amygdala — that ancient alarm system in your brain that hasn’t caught up to a world where the threat is usually an email, not a predator. What I keep coming back to is this: if the brain is rigged for friction, then presence is an act of rebellion. Finding your anchor — even for sixty seconds, even just one sound on the walk to the mailbox — is a deliberate refusal to be swept along.

That’s not toxic positivity. That’s neuroscience dressed in warm socks.

The Village Hearth opening this month felt like an anchor, too. Not just for you, but for me. Building something and then releasing it into the world — saying “here, this is what I think you might need” — is vulnerable in a way that doesn’t get easier with practice. But the fire is lit in there now, and I keep checking the Shared Hearth count, and every time I see you gathered around it, something in me settles.

You are part of what holds this place together.

In February, we spoke about the Human Signature —the remembering that we have real, tangible, human lives to live and not to be so wrapped up in the digital world.

But as we move into March, the light is changing. It’s subtle (the way the sun hits the wall a few minutes later each day), but it’s there.

March can be a challenging month. The novelty of the “fresh start” of January and February has worn thin, the ground is still hard, and the warmth of spring might still feel a bit far off (if you’re in the Northern Hemisphere that is. If you’re south of the equator, you might be feeling the air grow ever so slightly cooler). It’s the month of the Great Thaw.

Thawing isn’t a neat or tidy process. It’s messy. It’s the sound of ice cracking, the smell of damp earth, and the realization that things have shifted underneath the surface while we weren’t looking. It’s a transition that requires a specific kind of courage: the courage to stay soft when the world is still cold.

For our Emberlight circle this month, I want to lean into the idea of the Softened Edge. What if we stopped bracing ourselves? What if we allowed the “frozen” parts of our lives—the rigid expectations, the hard-set plans, the parts of ourselves we’ve kept on hold—to simply begin to melt and breathe?

Around the Hearth: A March Inquiry

In my own life, I’ve been noticing where I’ve become “braced” (like Elara in the village, hands stained with the work of repair, realizing that some things don’t need fixing, they just need to be seen from a different perspective). I’m learning that there is a difference between being strong and being rigid.

Hello friends and wonderers,

Pull up a chair. The hearth is especially warm today, a necessary contrast to the damp, grey edge of February (at least for me, where I live on the west coast of Canada. Though today it is actually sunny — but quite chilly. Nice change. Kind of).

In January, we talked about Deep Roots—the invisible work of anchoring ourselves before the world starts asking us to be productive again. But as we move deeper into the year, I’ve been thinking about what it looks like when those roots start to push through the surface. Not in a polished, “new year, new you” kind of way, but in the real, unpredictable way that things actually grow.

This month in the village, we’re looking at The Human Signature. In a world that’s being rapidly “smoothed over” by algorithms and artificial perfection, our greatest act of defiance is to leave a mark that’s unmistakably ours. It’s the wobbly line in a drawing, the visible thread in a hand-stitched hem, and the courage to let our rough edges show.

I’ve spent the last few weeks wrestling with pixels and logic to build Human vs. AI card game (which you can find in the Village shop), and it’s reminded me that the value isn’t in the win—it’s in the friction. It’s in the “Burnt Toast” moments that prove we were actually there, inhabiting our lives instead of just performing them.

February Reflections & Village Gatherings

• The Grit in the Repair: We’re exploring why we don’t need to fix what’s broken, but rather find the wonder in the brokenness.

• The Village Vibe Audit: I’ve been fussing over the digital shop, trying to make it feel like a local maker’s stall. It’s a reminder that even our online spaces deserve a bit of hand-touched soul.

• Absorbed Action: This month, we’re shifting our focus from posing for the world to being absorbed in the doing. Look for Elara (the face of my Substack) in the garden or at the workbench—she’s not looking at the camera much lately; she’s too busy with the work at hand.

The world is very loud right now about who we should “become” (thanks arbitrary new start to the year! Historically the start to the year has changed for various reasons, over the centuries)

Every corner of the digital landscape is currently a flurry of resolutions, habit trackers, and the sudden, frantic urge to optimize our lives. It feels less like a beginning and more like a race we’ve already started feeling left behind.

But in the natural world, January isn’t a month of blooming. It is a month of deep, invisible work.

Underneath the frost (if you’re in the Northern hemisphere anyway, where I am), roots are expanding. The earth is resting, not because it is lazy, but because resting is the only way to sustain the growth that comes later.

I want to propose an anti-resolution for our Emberlight circle this month: What if we didn’t try to “fix” ourselves? What if, instead of adding more to our plates, we simply noticed what is already sustaining us?

I’ve been wanting to create a shared space here — not just a place where I write and you read, but where we can gather together. Think of it as pulling up a chair by the hearth, pausing once a month, and tending to the sparks of wonder that keep us going.

A quick note before we begin: Emberlight is a monthly community circle — gentler pace, shared reflections, a place to feel less alone. Many Substack gatherings are tucked away behind paywalls, but I want this space to feel open, welcoming, and accessible. I want it to be an open-door space, so I’m offering it by donation through Ko-Fi. You’re welcome to join freely (as with everything to do with Dose of Wonder), and if you’d like to support, you can do so with a one-time or whenever-you-feel-called gift through my Ko-fi at the bottom.

In most corners of the internet, community is a product you buy. In this village, it is a space we hold. I choose not to put the Emberlight or our Village Chat behind a paywall because I believe wonder shouldn’t have a toll booth.

This space is kept warm by those who choose to contribute. When you become a paid villager, you aren’t buying ‘extra’ access; you are honouring the work it takes to keep the lanterns lit for everyone. You are sponsoring a seat at the fire for someone who might need the warmth but can’t afford the wood. It is a neighbourly way of being, and I am grateful for it.

I’ve been wanting to create a new space here — a place not just for reading or writing, but for gathering. I’m thrilled to introduce The Emberlight, a cozy corner of my Dose of Wonder Substack where we’ll pause once a month, share reflections, and tend to the sparks of wonder in our everyday lives.

Think of it like pulling up a chair by the hearth. This isn’t about polished answers or perfect insights — it’s about showing up, noticing, and connecting over the small things that matter.

The Emberlight is an open door space, so I’m offering it by donation through Ko-Fi. Many Substack gatherings are tucked away behind paywalls, but I want this space to feel open, welcoming, and accessible

That means you’re welcome to join freely, and if you’d like to support, you can do so with a one-time or monthly, or whenever-you-feel-called gift (suggested $5–10). Anyone can pull up a chair, join the conversation, and leave when they like. It’s about presence, curiosity, and gentle connection.

My writing here on Substack will always be free for all (but I am turning on paid subscriptions as another doorway of support for anyone who feels moved to chip in. No velvet ropes, no locked gates, no secret extras. Just a way to help sustain the work if it feels right to you.

The Wonder Kits will continue to live on Ko-Fi as paid resources.
