Thanks Caitlin, such valuable advice. I’ve gone from being a hard core news junkie to someone who scans the headlines warily and at arms length. In my subscriptions and podcast listening, I’m engaged in a gradual, exploratory shift to other subjects, ones that touch more on the inner life and on how to renew or reinvent that inner life in order to better serve. A tiny wondrous, warming experience lately: a spontaneous, lighthearted conversation about bird feeders with a fellow shopper at a hardware store this afternoon. Cheers! 😊
oh how nice to have such a lovely conversation with someone out shopping! about something that isn't about anything horrendous in the news but something as simple and joyous as birds/bird feeding/bird watching! Weirdly, when I was in highschool, I read the newspaper while eating my breakfast and watched the news before going to school...but for many years I've avoided it as much as possible (my husband watches the news each night so I don't really escape it, but I try to not pay too much attention because it's...just awful more than not.
Pieces like this one are so important. It sometimes feels like we are all writing the same thing over and over again. That we are writing the same thing over and over again. And we are. Because what we need to stay afloat. What we need to take one more step forward in the mirky waters when we cannot see or control what is underneath, to find the courage to walk on a surface of unknown, to wake up without anxiety or a bit less, to smile - what we need is simple. A few basic things repeated continuously. This is what we are reminding one another. There are days when I feel as if nothing I write has meaning. But then, someone reminds me that it does. There is wonderful to how we lift one another up and turn on the light. Love girlfriend and thank you. xo
