This is word that somehow came to be when my daughter was about 8:

"spaghettinoche". In our family, it is filled with love and means good night. No idea how it came to be, but we still say it to one another.

I love this one so much. My favorite if I had to choose one. Ubuntu. It is like a Namaste. I chose a name for myself years ago during a period (well one of them 😅) when I was feeling lost. Ango. It is a Japanese/zen word meaning peaceful dwelling. I decided to become my own home. Love words. With I had a better memory for them. Will definitely save this one for future reference. 🙏💞

Really good and interesting piece, Caitlin, thanks. Effective to cite examples on "both sides of the coin." I think the one that resonated most with me was the one you mentioned at the top, Yutori. Creating more spaciousness in my life is something I have been consciously trying to do lately. Today, synchronistically - before even reading this - I had done Tamara Levitt's meditation on the Calm app titled Ikigai, another Japanese concept, this one expressing the idea of following your passion, which is always good advice. 😊

That ikigai meditation is one of my favourite Daily Calm's! My other faves are: Morning (or is it Mornings?), and also Gezellig, and city energy

How delightful! I come across words like that but don't collect them... so I forget. I love Tsundoku - I didn't know there was a word for my habit (!!) The Japanese language seems to be rich in these words. I wonder if it relates to the art of haiku - of observing the world closely and writing it down succinctly. I like the phrase shinrin-yoku which means 'forest bathing'. There is a Scandinavian word 'Hygge' which means the cultivation of a warm and simple life. By the way - I feel you have the beginnings of a charming book :)

Yes! Japanese does seem to have a lot of these very emotive words!

And yes, I love shinrin-yoku too! I recently did a podcast on it (forest bathing) based on an old article of mine.

And I love the idea of hygge. My husband got me a book years ago called The Little Book of Hygge and it had all these great practices - and recipes! (Yum!) - in it.

It reminds me of the Dutch word Gezellig, which means "window weather" basically bad weather (stormy etc) that you're happy to observe through the window of your house being safe and warm and cozy inside when outside is not so nice! There's so many great words - especially in non-English languages! ☺️

You could make a little book out of them!

I guess I could..! That's an interesting idea. Maybe I could make a series on Substack and then compile them into a little ebook once there's enough! I'll have a think about that! ☺️ thanks for the great idea!

Yes - and you could just have a collection of these interesting words, say a bit about where they come from. It would not need to be long. One of those sweet little books you dip into for comfort and encouragement. You could even call it:

(nagusame) – Japanese

Literal meaning: "comfort, solace"

Can refer to words or actions that bring emotional relief or encouragement.

And if you do create it - let me know as i will promote it on my stack! :D
