That is a really great way of viewing these. I've never stopped to think about the difference (thank for doing that and bringing it to our attention!) but it's simple and lovely. It asks us to be present in our lives. And we can still be grateful later too. (And for the record, I also enjoy the word 'delve'. I'm not sure why that's tied to AI...🤣)
Yes! We can be both appreciative AND grateful! Butit seems like everything is always just 'gratitude gratitude gratitude '! Which isn't a bad thing, but there's other ways of looking at stuff than just through the lens of gratitude! And yeah I don’t know why delve is tied to AI! I've seen it in several articles about key words/phrases that are AI red flags...and I'm like...but I used those words!!! 😆 🤣
It always comes back to perspective, right? And it's like those - em dashes - that I use all the time but now feel awkward about! Anyway thank you, again, for your appreciation/ gratitude insights!
This is really interesting, Caitlin, because I’ve been actually wondering lately whether you might explore the differences between these two concepts. You’ve written and podcasted thoughtfully on gratitude in the past, but appreciation does have a subtle, different vibe.
I agree fully with what you’ve expressed here. To add my own take on it - and I don’t pretend these ideas are unique to me - I think gratitude sometimes (not always) carries within it an inherent (perhaps often unconscious) juxtaposition to the absence or opposite of what one is grateful for. “I am so grateful for (fill in the blank), because… there are so many who are lacking this, or because I lacked this in the past, I or someone I love just dodged a big bullet… or whatever.” Whereas appreciation is more about the intrinsic, desirable qualities of the object of the appreciation, something that occurs, as you write, in the immediate present. It is a more unequivocally positive, simple expression.
Thanks again for exploring this really important subject so well! 😊
Hi Eric! That's funny you were wondering if I'd tackle these 2 things...and i have! 😄 and that's so true gratitude could be for what you have versus what others don't (amd vice versa). And that's another great point that appreciation is always a positive thing whereas gratitude could hinge on avoidance of a negative! Never thought of it like that, so thank you for bringing that up!
Thank you for showing the distinction between these 2 concepts. ‘Gratitude is the whole painting, after the fact. Appreciation is the brushstroke you’re admiring up close right now in this moment.’ I love how this explanation distinguishes the tense and perspective.

Yes, i wrote a note the other week about em dashes and AI! Like, are we not allowed to use proper punctuation now?! Sheesh! Anyway you're welcome! 😊

You're welcome! I didn't really know the difference til I started looking into them both!
